Final amount raised by Malton Motor Club for Calder Rally Rescue reaches over £3,500

The final amount raised by Malton Motor Club for Calder Rally Rescue through their fundraising auction on Friday 3 August has reached £3,726.52.

Earlier this week the total had been at the £3,400 mark but after receiving late donations and people generously paying above their bids, the final count eventually rose to stand at £3,726.52 that has now been presented to Calder Rally Rescue.

The amount raised has ensured that the rescue unit can now buy a new ambulance to continue their vital work in the sport.

MMC member and auction organiser Nicola Harper said: I'm so pleased we managed to raise so much money for Calder. I can't get over how generous everyone was.

Around 90 lots were auctioned off in the event hosted by Sky News Sports presenter Jon Desborough nearly two weeks ago at the Fairfield Manor Hotel near York.

Items that were sold included T-shirts signed by former World Rally Champions Colin McRae and Petter Solberg and a day's testing with driver Ryan Champion, with money collected from a raffle also going towards the cause.

Mat Wins Innovation Scholarship!

Ryan, Nick, Guy and Matt.

At the end of a long day of tests and interviews the final round of the 2006 Innovation Rally Scholarship was too close to call, with 12 finalists to choose from the judges came to a unanimous decision... to award the scholarship to not 1, but 2 deserving young rally drivers, Mat Smith and Nick Edwards.

After a day at the Innovation Rallyschool at Tong Park near Leeds, the 12 finalists were whittled down to just two contenders. Contestants were from all walks of life, and from as far a field as South Africa, however the calibre of all 12 was remarkable, and Mat would have it tough to impress the judges.

The activities included a fitness test at the beginning of the day, a variety of driving tests on the forest stages in a Subaru Impreza rally car, and daunting and intimidating interviews with the panel of judges.  The judges included 2006 Junior World Rally Championship contender, and Suzuki driver Guy Wilks, 2006 Factory Team Mitsubishi driver Ryan Champion and 2006 Fiesta ST UK Champion Chris Moore.

The 2006 Scholarship saw 68 registrants tackle the opening round, but such was the high level of standards that these hopefuls had to be whittled down to 28 returning for round 2. But, only 12 would be back for the final shot at the prize.

Mathew Smith (21) said after the event "Incredible.  Absolutely incredible!  This has been my goal all year long, and to succeed is, just incredible!"

Chris Moore, Innovation co-founder, had this to say on the day; Never has choosing a winner been so difficult.  All of the finalists showed incredible skills, talent and dedication, but we eventually narrowed it down to 2 people.  After taking an extra hour of deliberation we still could not split the pair and so took the unique decision of awarding it to two deserving youngsters!

The full details of what Mat has won are yet to be confirmed, as all 3 judges are this week contending the British round of the World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB, based in Cardiff.  Mat however states that he will do the best he can to make the best of whatever opportunities this prize brings his way.

MMC takes 2005 by storm!
The 2005 Rally season has been a successful one for MMC members across all aspects of the sport.  A latecomer to the sport, Alan "Sooty" Richardson was delighted when he and co-driver Chris Roe took 1st in the 1400cc classes on both the ANCC and ANECCC Stage Rally Championships!  The little green & yellow Nova hasn't had it's most reliable year, yet the results have been good when they were there, and the regular pairing of Sooty & Chris work well together with the rest of the Richardson Bodyworks Team.

John Bannister also had a good season in the fiercely fought BTRDA National Rally Championship, when he took 5th overall and 2nd in class and Group N, however it was only just, he missed out on being group N champion by just 3 seconds!  John is a regular in the BTRDA and is hoping for more success as he defends his 2005 result in 2006.

Meanwhile, Banner Snr was out taking the Roger Albert Clark Rally by the scruff of the neck.  He and regular co-driver Kevin Rae, didn't have such an easy run of it this year, although they still went on to win the open part of the event outright, even after loosing a substantial amount of time while rolling in the early Scottish mist!  Well done guys!

On the Road Rally front, MMC's Steve 'Stan' Featherstone won the ANCC Road Rally Championship outright, and narrowly missed taking another championship win!  The 205 driver from Crayke set his stall out to win the ANCC Championship and came home with the trophy he was after.  Perhaps all the sleepless nights as a new Dad put him in good stead after all!!

Club Member Becomes BRC Champion!!
MMC member Jonny Milner had an amazing season of results in 2002, and crowned the year on his home event the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire taking the Pirelli British Rally Championship in style. In a season which has been truly amazing Jonny silenced many of his critics with some stunning displays of speed in the Team Dynamics Pro Rally Toyota Corolla WRC, showing a consistent finishing ability and the grit and determination we have all come to expect from him. MMC congratulate Jonny and co-driver Nicky Beech - The 2002 British Rally Champions!

Jonny and Nicky also went on to win the 2003 British Rally Championship and are now trying hard to win it 3 years on the trot in 2004. This is a feat no one else has ever managed, and it's turning out to be a trying year for the Yorkshire Man.
